LED-lit electric violin

The Prism is an electric violin whose body lights up with an on-board LED system. This onboard LED system has several modes.

The Prism has the simple and sleek design of our electric violins line and a pickup with excellent sound quality!

The current version that we are producing is the Prism ii.

Illumination

The Prism incorporates dozens of LEDs in order to light up on stage. It offers different lighting settings selectable by the violinist:

  • Mode 1 – Breath: A selectable color that flickers intermittently like breathing
  • Mode 2 – Pure: A single color chosen by the violinist
  • Mode 3 – Gradient: A changing color gradient, adaptable by the violinist
  • Mode 4 – Prism: A changing color gradient, based on a prism’s colors.
  • Mode 5 – Sound Reactive: A responsive mode depending on what is played by the violinist. The Prism lights up with different intensities depending on the notes played.
  • Mode 6 – Color Reactive: A responsive mode depending on what is played by the violinist. The Prism changes colors according to the notes played.
  • Mode 7 – Fire: A mode that imitates flames.

Sound

Like the Line, the Prism electric violin is equipped with our ‘S pickup’. It is a very responsive electric piezo pickup with a great sound quality. The power of these pickups avoids the use of an internal preamp. All S pickups are manufactured by 3Dvarius. ‘S pickups’ use various sensors positioned under the strings.

LED and sound systems are completely separated to avoid sound interferences.

Customization

We offer the white option for the violin body but you can also get your favorite color by using our customization service. It includes the color of the body and its finish, the color of the pegs and much more.

You have also 2 classic options for the tuning pegs: chrome plated or black. More pegs are available with the customization service.

If you have some questions about another color or finish, please contact us to further discuss your needs.

LED management

The LEDs are powered by a 9-volt battery. We suggest using a 9-volt rechargeable battery, as its purpose is solely to power the LEDs.

The LEDs are controllable using two rotary and push buttons. The first button allows the violinist to control the different modes and select the colors. The second manages the LED light intensity. The light intensity is such that, in dark setting, it is necessary to decrease it in order to avoid being blinded!

The battery life is approximately 1 hour and a half, depending on the mode and intensity of the selected LEDs.

The electronic system embedded in the violin body can be updated by the user. Suggested updates will be made available to instrumentalists, as free downloads from our website.

Like presented on the pictures, the Prism ii does not use anymore LEDs on the support shoulder rest. We removed them to reduce the final weight and increase the battery life.

Shape & Design

The Prism’s design is similar to our other electric violins. The design was created in order to be the most simple as possible.

After machining, the violin body is sanded manually to obtain a soft feel and undergoes a series of post-treatments in order to protect it durably.

The electronic system is placed in a custom box, into which transparent parts are inserted.

They provide excellent LED reflection on the whole violin body and great color visibility for the audience.

Made In France

Like all our electric violins, the Prism is entirely made in France, specifically in Occitania (Southern France), home of 3Dvarius.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I customize my Prism?

We can certainly provide you with a customization service. Please visit our Custom Shop to know more.

I would paint my Prism in a specific color. Is it possible?

Yes, we can create a Prism and paint it by a specific color. Visit our Custom Shop to fill the customization form and explain your ideas. We are working with the RAL color palette. If you do not the professional color code of your color, you can send us a picture and we will contact our paint dealer to get a similar hue. For this kind of customization, please note that we do not accept any return. This Prism will be yours with your own customization, and we won’t be able to sell it to another person.

What type of battery should I use?

The Prism requires a 9V battery to operate the lights. The battery is not included with the electric violin. We recommend the use of 9V Li-ion rechargeable batteries.

Does the battery need to be working for the sound of the violin to be heard?

No, you do not need the battery to play the electric violin. It only provides power to the light system. The sound and light systems are completely independent from each other.

I can’t change between modes / My violin is stuck on a particular mode

First, check that you are properly using the button that allows you to change the mode by pushing it. If this doesn’t work, check the charge of your battery. If it is too low, then it is not transmitting enough power to the Prism’s electronic control unit. Be careful, just because the lights stay on doesn’t mean that the internal processor of the violin has enough power to process the instructions.

Can I create my own light mode?

It is not possible at the moment.

What is the purpose of the USB plug found on the back of the Prism?

It is used to update the Prism. There have been no updates published to date, but they will be made available through our website.

Can you replace the 9v battery with a built-in Li-ion battery?

Current European and international regulations regarding Li-ion batteries are very strict. The use of a Li-ion battery requires obtaining certifications and the use of a specific carrier. We could do this but unfortunately not all our resellers are able to do so. That means that they would be unable to sell our instruments. Therefore, we have excluded this possibility.

I lost the magnetic cover for the battery. How can I get a new one?

We provide customer service for all our instruments. Please contact us if you need to replace the lost part.

How long does the battery last?

Using the lights at full capacity, the battery life is 1 hour and a half.

Is the bridge leaning, misplaced or tilted?

Please watch our tutorial video on how to properly straighten the bridge. Before you start, we recommend that you loosen the strings and apply a little bit of graphite pencil at the bottom of each slot maintaining the string aligned with the bridge. This will facilitate the straightening of the bridge and will keep your ropes from breaking.

What are the delivery times?

Unless there is a particular indication on the page, our electric violins are available in our stock and ready to leave our premises. For the Prism, we receive many orders every week and sometimes we need a week to finalize it. Delivery times vary from continent to continent. It takes about 3 to 4 days in Europe via carrier, between 5 and 7 days when shipping to North America, and more than 7 days for other continents.
Production and delivery times for the 3Dvarius or for a personalized violin are an exception since we have to make special pieces according to the needs and wishes of the violinist.

Sound Reactive / Color Reactive mode no longer reacts on a particular string?

The calibration of your Prism has probably been affected when you replaced the battery. Press and hold the light intensity control button for more than 5 seconds and a blue, white, red color code will appear. Turn the same button while playing the strings to calibrate the responsiveness of your Prism. Once you are satisfied with the results, press the same button once. This will store your calibration setting in the memory.

How do I clean my Prism?

Use a standard microfiber cloth to remove any rosin dust or other residues. Do not apply any chemicals to your instrument as this may damage the varnish that protects it.

What strings do you put on the Prism? And how to replace them?

We no longer mention any particular brand of strings because we rely on our distributor’s restocking. We generally use Thomastik, D’Addario or Prim strings. All ball-end violin strings are compatible with our electric violins. Be sure to check out our tutorial on how to replace your strings. And you can read our feedback on the different sets of strings we have tried with our instruments.

Does the S pickup produce a good-quality sound?

The S pickup features various sensors positioned under the strings which makes it very responsive as well as powerful enough to eliminate the use of a preamp. The difference with the X pickup is in the number of sensors and their sensitivity.

Is there a left-handed Prism?

Our violins are not adapted for left-handed people.

My electric violin is not exactly the same than on your pictures

Our electric violins are available for many years now. Like any luthier and maker, we are improving each violin model every year by replacing some material, trying new paints and finishes, new shapes, etc. The wood color can be different too because it is not possible to get everytime the same color.

Why my Prism does not have LEDS on the shoulder rest?

We did in the past a first version using LEDs on the shoulder rest support. We removed them a few years ago following violinist’s returns to reduce its weight. The new Prism (called the Prism ii for its second version) does not use LEDs at the bottom anymore.

I have a 4 string Prism for my events. Honestly, I love the LED modes and they are doing more than the job. People are always happy when the lights are turn on. I’m using it with some effects stompboxes to get a nice sound. You should get one too!

I bought a Prism for private events. If you would LED on your instrument, I think today this violin is the best one. The sound is good and the LED modes are working great.
